Daddy’s Girl, Momma’s Boy

I can say the two words “Daddy’s girl”, and most Americans have an idea of what that means. Often another expression goes along with “Daddy’s girl” – “she has her Dad wrapped around her little finger.” This means that Dad adores his daughter so much that he will give her anything she wants. I can say the two words “Momma’s boy”, and most Americans have an idea of what that means also. A “Momma’s boy” is very close to or attached to his mother and is also “tied to his Momma’s apron strings.” This means that Mom takes such good care of her son, that he doesn’t want to grow up and become independent.

Do you use similar types of idioms in your native culture? Explain how these idioms do or don’t fit people in your culture. Think of your own family or people you know. Have you known people that fit one of those idioms? Give examples.

Do you think that moms and sons have a better relationship, on average, than moms and daughters? Do dads and daughters have a better relationship, on average, than dads and sons? Try to defend both sides of each question – yes and no. What evidence supports your thesis?

How do you decide if someone is spoiled? Someone may have a very close relationship with one or both parents. Parents may love a child very much and be happy to do anything for him or her. Does that mean the child is spoiled? How do you explain the difference between being spoiled and being well-loved? How can a parent love their children well without spoiling them?

What kind of a relationship did you have with your parents, both mom and dad? Were you closer to one parent than the other? Why or why not? What are some favorite memories of experiences with your parents? What kind of activities do you remember as enjoyable with your parents?

What other family members do you have favorite memories about – Grandparents? Uncles or aunts? Cousins? Siblings?
